The Cutest Food on the Planet

I don’t know if you all have noticed but it has been a LOOOONG time since I’ve posted an actual recipe here for you.  The Kale Casserole doesn’t exactly count because I took those photographs about 3 months before our baby was born.  Since Ava’s arrival, it’s been a whole different story.  Lots of last minute meals consisting of a hodgepodge of quinoa and frozen veggies (because it’s fast)… and lots of, “Eat whatever you can find, Honey!!” going on around here.

I hope you don’t mind that you’ve been getting more life-updates than actual food.

Today I’m back in the saddle though!  And today I have a recipe that I am SOSOSOSOSOSOSOSOSO  excited to show you, because it is the cutest food on the planet.

I posted this teaser on the Pretty/Hungry facebook page this week…

Popped Sorghum

~

…And so far no one has been able to guess what it is.  So I’m gonna tell you!

It is sorghum.

Sorghum Grains are high in protein and become the most adorable "mini popcorn!"

A bit anti-climactic, I know.  But just you wait!!!

Sorghum might only sound familiar to you in the form of sorghum molasses.  But the molasses actually comes from the sorghum grain.  And the sorghum grain is a marvelous thing.

It is very high in protein (similar to quinoa!) and therefore, a very nutritional food to add to your family’s diet.  It is also extremely inexpensive (unlike quinoa!) … I found my bag on Amazon for like three dollars!

But the best thing about it is that you can pop it just like popcorn!

AND it’s MINI…

Are you dying yet???

Sorghum is essentially a higher-protein and exponentially-cuter version of popcorn!!

I popped some up the other morning and let my little one snack on it in her new little kitchen she got for Christmas.  Doesn’t it look adorable in her little measuring cup “pots & pans”?  I’m envisioning popped sorghum for little dolls’ tea parties, popped sorghum for Barbie, popped sorghum for play-cooking.  My brain is just in cuteness-overload right now imagining the possibilities.

I had to pass this along.  Try it at home!  It’s a cinch… only takes about 5 minutes!

And now, more cute pictures of Elsa playing kitchen and snacking on this adorable popped sorghum.

Author:
Recipe Type:: Snack
Serves:: 1
Ingredients:
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • ¼ C. sorghum grains
Directions:
  1. On the stovetop, heat oil and salt in a small saucepan (with tight-fitting lid) over Med/High heat. Add in sorghum grains and shake pan to coat grains evenly with oil. Place lid on pan and continue to shake the pan over the heat as sorghum grains start to pop. Remove from heat when popping slows to 5 seconds between pops.
  2. Note: As with popped corn, not every kernel will pop. However, sorghum kernels are much easier to chew, even when un-popped, so feel free to pour the popped sorghum into your mouth with abandon. There is no need to pick out the un-popped kernels!

    So great you’re writing about this! Popped Sorghum has been a staple of my diet for years! I get mine from the mini mops company – myminipops.com – Also Haylie Pomroy is a HUGE proponent of this. Thanks for sharing!
