“A Mommy’s Guide to Taking Better Pictures”

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I look through the photo files on my phone/computer and am sorely disappointed in myself.  I mean, of all the things I photograph in life, shouldn’t priceless memories with my husband and children rank right up at the top?  And yet I find that the photos I do manage to capture are a sad representation of the wonderful life we lead.  The colors are orange-y, the faces are out-of-focus, and (more often than not) there are months at a time just plain missing!

Oh sure, I have a nice camera.  And I’m great about pulling it out to snap photos of food… but food sits still.  My child does not.  And rather than meeting that challenge head-on, I tend to wimp out and resort to blurry phone photos, or worse, none at all.  So when my longtime friend, Taylor Jackson, announced the release of her new book, “A Mommy’s Guide to Taking Better Pictures,” I was like, “Yep. Genius!”  I gobbled the book up and found it to be very helpful and personally motivating.  So I was thrilled when Taylor contacted me about giving away a copy to one lucky Pretty/Hungry reader!

“A Mommy’s Guide to Taking Better Pictures” is meant to inspire and equip moms to take full advantage of their cameras and capture their everyday family moments more beautifully.  The information Taylor provides in “A Mommy’s Guide” is super-practical, yet written in Taylor’s easy and personal style, which makes it way more helpful than reading a dry camera manual.  Oh, and did I mention the book is a stunning piece of eye candy as well as brain candy?  I can’t resist a book full of pretty pictures, can you?

Besides being a very talented Dallas-area photographer/blogger (and a newly-minted author,) Taylor is a mommy to Vera (3) and Ike (1), and wife to her college sweetheart, Scot.  About four years ago, Scot encouraged Taylor to begin teaching workshops to eager moms wanting to make better use of their nice cameras. As the Jacksons had children of their own, Taylor resolved to write a book based on her workshops, and “A Mommy’s Guide to Taking Better Pictures” was born.  It is available for purchase here, (either in e-book form, or as a lovely hard copy magazine) and it covers a wide range of basic photography tips and techniques. It is geared toward beginners and/or people who have been limited to shooting in auto because of their lack of understanding.

Taylor and I have been friends since college, and I have the supreme honor of being able to say that I was photographed by Taylor back before she got all famous…

And no, the photo above is not the excerpt from Italian Vogue you’re probably thinking it is… it is actually me and my freshman roommates, posing for Taylor in our college dorm room.  (I hope you can sense my dripping sarcasm.  This is by no means an example of Taylor’s amazing talent.  For that, you can look below!)
