Babymoon Getaway

Are you familiar with the Babymoon trend?  Essentially, it’s a mini-vacation you take right before a new baby enters the family.  A bit of a “last hurrah” where you soak up the pleasures of uninterrupted sleep and quiet restaurant meals before those things become ancient history.  (By the way, our lives changed in awesome ways when Baby Sweets #1 was born, so I’m not complaining.  Just stating the obvious… things do NOT stay the same once baby enters the scene.)  Anyway, this weekend was a perfect storm of opportunity for Chris and I to get away and celebrate.  Saturday the 6th was our 5-year Anniversary (woohoo!), Sunday the 7th was Chris’s Birthday, and we’ll be welcoming a new baby into our household within 4 weeks.

Thanks to a friend who owns a condo right in the heart of downtown Memphis, we got to explore a super-cool city, enjoy some extreme relaxation, and try lots of terrific food – the perfect weekend!  Amazingly, almost everything we did was within walking distance of our condo (even by this very large mama’s standards.)  And perhaps the best part of all was that I got to splurge on a heavenly 90-minute prenatal massage, which was soooo needed, you can’t even imagine.  (I’m pretty sure my feet, hips, and sciatic nerve are trying to secede from the union that is the rest of my body, that’s how miserable they are.  For more fascinating complaint sessions bump-dates, you can check out my personal blog, here.)

Before leaving, I gathered a few restaurant recommendations from friends and I was so glad I did!  First stop was Texas de Brazil on Friday night, which was not recommended by any foodie friends, but is definitely a must for Chris when we’re in the neighborhood.  Unlimited grilled meats brought right to your table? Count him IN.  I love it there too… I’m not complaining a bit.  Their salad bar is deluxe and the fillet mignon is like buttah.

Saturday morning we hit up Tart, which is a very earthy and hip cafe that specializes in French-style pastries (both savory and sweet) and coffee.  We LOVED it.  Babymoon rules stated that we were allowed to really indulge, so we both ordered whatever our little hearts desired!  Chris got a Croque Monsieur sandwich and a Ganache Hot Cocoa, and I got a fabulous 3-Cheese Quiche, a Cherry Tart, and a Mocha.  (I spoke to the owner later and she told me they actually grind their own chocolate in-house to make the mochas.  So delish!)  We also spent a few hours that morning enjoying the cafe atmosphere while I took advantage of the WiFi connection to get a little work done.  Such a treat, since normally my work hours are relegated to Elsa’s nap time, which means that getting to enjoy a yummy-smelling coffee shop at the same time is not in the cards.  We had a great morning, and my mocha really was perfection.

Saturday’s dinner was another huge treat at the ultra-romantic Itta Bena.  Thank goodness we were given this recommendation or else we’d never have found the place ourselves!  It is on the 3rd floor of BB King’s Jazz Club on Beale Street, with no sign outside or anything!  You just have to know it’s there.  (That fact alone made us feel pretty high-class.)  Since it was our anniversary that night, we of course went all out again, ordering She-Crab Soup, Field Greens Salad, Fillet Mignon Sliders, Wild Mushroom Pasta, and White Chocolate Bread Pudding… just to name a few.  And as good as the food was, I think we both enjoyed the atmosphere even more.  The pianist/singer and guitar duo they had performing that night was just lovely.  Very easy on the ears. :)

Sunday morning, we decided to try out The Beauty Shop, since we had heard great things about their Brunch and their decor.  (It is a 50’s Beauty Parlor renovated into a restaurant.)  I’ve got to say, I found the “theme” to be underwhelming, as well as the blueberry pancakes, which is unfortunate since I had high hopes for them.  The other menu items we tried, however, were fantastic.  I highly recommend the Huevos Rancheros, and Chris gave the Banana Nutella Crepe two thumbs up!

And I already mentioned this, but the highlight of my weekend (other than all that extra sleep!!) was my prenatal massage.  A friend directed me to Massage Memphis (formerly Memphis Pregnancy Massage), and I had a fabulous experience.  They were fully equipped with the right set-up for a 36-weeker like myself, and bonus: it was one of the most affordable massages I’ve ever found anywhere.  I was also especially appreciative of the fact that they use unscented lotion there.  (That is so rare… but it’s especially nice when you have an ultra-sensitive preggo nose and they don’t assume you want to breathe lavendar for over an hour.)  And as for the rub-down itself, I could tell that they were familiar with the aches and pains that typically plague pregnant women and paid special attention to those areas.  I left feeling like a new woman!

We ended up nixing our ambitious plan of going to the Memphis Zoo on Sunday, since I have been having some pain and inflammation in my feet (pregnancy-induced plantar facciitis) and it has made it difficult to do much extra walking.  But I’m sure we’ll make it there someday!  In the meantime, I think our weekend of lounging about, reading, watching movies, and trying new food was pretty perfect.

And now, Baby Ava can just come whenever she’s ready!  I wanted to be sure we got the Babymoon out of the way first because I was so looking forward to it… and now that we have, I’m good to go. :)  Glad you all are getting to share a bit of the journey with me.

Coming up Monday, an awesome giveaway… I am pumped, and you will be too when you see what it is!

XO-
